Birds

217 different species of birds have been documented on eBird with the help of ~ 200 eBirders entering over 800 checklists.

Peak viewing season for species of interest includes:

Winter:  Short-eared owls, Northern harriers, Red-Tailed Hawks, various owl species.

March:  Migratory waterfowl in the ponds, (variety of ducks, cormorants, speckled geese)

April:     Yellow-headed blackbirds & eastern meadowlarks return. Trumpeter swans exhibit mating behavior

May:      Peak season for migratory birds

June:     Trumpeter swan cygnets are born (June 5-8th), bobolinks, dickcissels and common yellowthroats permeate the prairie.

July:      Virginia rails can be heard in the ponds to the northeast.

Sept:     Southern migration peaks end of month. Up to 20 different sparrow species if conditions are just right.

 

Plants & Trees

Almost 300 different species of plants and trees have been identified at the ABC.  The two files below are sorted in Scientific and Common names and the latest Universal FQA Assessment summary is shown in the third link.

The rarest plants are found in three ecosystems:  (1) Williams Woods, (2) the three fens and their water outflows and (3) along the Bark River.

Other Beasts

Some of the other beasts at the conservancy include:

> Coyotes

> Badgers

> Deer (lots of them)

> Crayfish 

> Butterflies, Moths and Odonata

> Ants (making huge mounds)
